Chloroquine, Zinc and Covid-19

Is there a Zinc and Covid-19 link? There are currently over a thousand people in serious or critical condition from Covid-19 in the U.S. It would cost a total of around five thousand dollars to treat all of them with Chloroquine. Chloroquine is traditionally a malaria drug and companies are donating millions of pills for experimental treatment of severe Covid-19 cases. We’ve lost over one hundred Americans in the past 24 hours and each day creates more of a death toll- both from the virus itself and the suicides and other residual deaths occurring during this crisis.

Marketing ‘Cures’

Visit Asian marketplaces, such as Alibaba. Sellers refer to chloroquine as the ‘coronavirus cure.’ They offer false (dangerous) hope. No one should try it without a doctors supervision. Doctors put patients on azithromycin during treatment as well.

This is not just a marketplace buzz term. Task forces of doctors in China and South Korea have come up with a regimen for anyone dealing with the coronavirus. Basically, the saving element in this situation is Zinc. Zinc has blocked viruses from replicating inside of cells in prior studies. When the virus enters the cell, it uses RNA from the cell to form viral proteins and self replicate.

Zinc has been found to block this process during in vitro experiments using SARS Covid (which is similar to Covid-19). It blocks viral reproduction from happening inside of the cell. Zinc has trouble getting through the cell wall as well. It needs an ionophore to help make the cell wall permiable. Chloroquine may help here. In vitro studies have shown that the levels of zinc in cells are drastically higher when chloroquine is taken along with zinc. This could also mean that elements of this regimen may be used as a preventative method to getting sick, rather than only in the very late stages of the disease.

The task force physicians in South Korea say this antiviral regimen is not needed if a patient is young, healthy and only showing mild symptoms with no underlying conditions. They also stated if more than 10 days have passed since the onset of the illness and the symptoms are mild, physicians do not have to start an antiviral medication.

At Risk Groups

If, however, patients are elderly or have underlying conditions with serious symptoms, doctors should strongly consider the antiviral treatment. They also said that if a doctor decides to use the antiviral therapy, they should start the administration as soon as possible (this basically means that they want a doctor to put anyone who is older or with an underlying condition who is showing symptoms on it right away)

The recommended dose for chloroquine in these severe cases is 500mg orally per day. Sticking to this amount is important because even a dose of under 2000mg can be fatal. They also suggest a regimen of another antiviral treatment of lopinavir 400mg/ritonavir 100mg. The New England Journal of Medicine conducted a trial and stated that treatment with this method was ineffective (although those in the lopinavir/ritonavir treatment had a 19.2% mortality rate verses 25% for the control group which indicates it could save lives.. These percentages are high because they were using the most severe cases).

Korean Studies

Chloroquine is not available in Korea, so doctors can also consider hydroxychloroquine (400mg orally per day). The antiviral treatment for the new coronavirus is most suitable for seven. Still, the period could be shortened or extended depending on clinical progress, the doctors said.

The World Health Organization is currently conducting follow-up trials using chloroquine to see if early results in Asia and France were correct. If it concludes similar findings, we could have a real weapon in the war on Covid-19. Other nations, including the United States, need to emulate South Korea if their data is correct. It has incurred a low number of deaths (111) following an outbreak that produced ten thousand infections.

Protocols in The United States

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated that his state will begin chloroquine treatments March 24th. It is also important to note social distancing and disinfecting all public areas also helped save lives there. Everyday can feel like an eternity without a solution to the virus. If there is a link between zinc and Covid-19 we need to start trials immediately.

This current WHO trial is will produce extensive data very soon. There will be issues with dosage. The therapeutic, toxic and lethal doses of chloroquine are extremely close. There could be an adequate amount to defeat Covid-19 that is also a fatal dose in itself. Hopefully we can hear some solid results in a week. Other experiments are being conducted with known anti viral vitamins such as vitamin D and zinc so hopefully we’ll have positive news soon. The United States death rate from this virus is accelerating and could be in the hundreds daily soon. We need some of these possible solutions to work. We need to confirm if there is a benefit of zinc and Covid-19 treatment.
