Marijuana has been shown to have many health benefits but it is still considered by the Federal government to have no medical value.  In fact it is categorized amoung the most illegal drugs in the world.  It is even more illegal than Cocaine!  Here is the DEA website’s defination of the category and listing of the most illegal drugs in our country.

Schedule I

Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Some examples of Schedule I drugs are:

heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy), methaqualone, and peyote

Cocaine is then mentioned in Schedule II.  This means that our federal government considers pot more addictive than cocaine and also rules out possible medical benefits (which it does not do with coke).  So the big question is, why is the federal govenment so afraid of a plant that can grow on the side of the road and help people out?  Exactly!  Marijuana is too easy to grow and provides too many health benefits with little or no possible regulation.  Coca plant are impossible to grow in the United States and the process of converting leaves to the final product include soaking them in gasoline.

Luckily the federal government has been backing of and letting it become a state right.  Marijuana is now recreational in ten states and is at least medicinally legal in 23 more.  It’s a great thing to see the federal government follow the Constitution and leave this issue up to the tenth amendment.  It is just highly irrational to keep pot schedule one when it has been shown beyond a shadow of a doubt to show health benefits.  I doubt one terminally ill cancer patient in this country would consider the DEAs assessment to be remotely accurate.
